In a lengthy online exchange hosted by The Wagner Journal, Mark Berry and Barry Emslie revisited the inexhaustible question: how far do Wagner’s anti-Jewish views contaminate his operas? Enough said, one might think, especially within the confines of a single journal. Yet the debate had on both sides a signal deficiency: the absence of any reference to other anti-Jewish writing of Wagner’s lifetime.
