It is hardly surprising if lovers of German culture are great admirers of Richard Wagner and Thomas Mann. The music dramas of the former and the literary fiction of the latter are of incomparable importance. Yet putting aside the aesthetic pleasure of their creative work, one is struck by the degree to which they both engaged in an ambitious and controversial encounter with Germany and the German national character.
