Adroit scheduling and the efficient resources of Deutsche Bahn permitted a five-day reappraisal of the three German Romantic operas – Der fliegende Holländer, Tannhäuser and Lohengrin – that form the centrepiece of Wagner’s early maturity. Each performance had its moments and taken together they offered an illuminating conspectus of production styles over the last decade or so.
