Review of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, directed Lindtberg, conducted Ludwig, Hamburg, 1970 (Arthaus Musik, 2 DVDs).

July 2007, Volume 1, Number 2, 101–4.

In the 1960s and early 1970s, the Hamburg State Opera, with Rolf Liebermann at the helm as Intendant, experienced a kind of golden age. Liebermann managed to get together a first-class ensemble and was responsible for a series of much acclaimed productions, ten of which were documented in the form of films, intended for broadcasting by the Norddeutscher Rundfunk, and now transferred by Arthaus to another popular medium, the DVD.

The only Wagner opera among them is Die Meistersinger, staged by Leopold Lindtberg, who was better known as a film director.
