It took seven years of negotiation and many an expensive stage modification to allow Japan to see the Bayreuth Festival on tour with two Wieland Wagner productions at their peak. They came with his 1962 production of Tristan und Isolde (the NHK film recording of these performances, with Nilsson, Windgassen and Hotter under Pierre Boulez, has been circulating on specialist labels since the late 1980s) and this Die Walküre from Wieland’s second Ring cycle, new in 1965, which became generally available only last year.
