Review of Parsifal, directed Tcherniakov, conducted Jordan, Berlin Staatsoper, 2025.
Ten years after it was first unveiled, this return of Dmitri Tcherniakov’s production of Parsifal for the Staatsoper in Berlin is marked simultaneously by consistency and change. The major change comes in the fact that this is the first time that Daniel Barenboim – whose last years in charge of the Staatsoper saw multiple collaborations with the Russian director – has not been conducting. Seven years after its last revival (it was a centrepiece of the Staatsoper’s Easter ‘Festtage’ from 2015 to 2018), conducting duties now fall to Philippe Jordan.
