Review of Michael Steinberg, The Philosopher’s ‘Ring’ – Wagner as Thinker and Dramatist (Camden House, 2026).
November 2026, Volume 20, Number 3, 92–3.
New books on Wagner are always welcome, even when they are mostly about things one already knows. Michael Steinberg’s recent volume makes for an agreeable read, although its internal inconsistency and proposed parallels between Wagnerian concepts and Idealism raise a few questions. The Philosopher’s ‘Ring’ examines Wagner’s magnum opus in the context of early 19th-century German philosophy, from Fichte to Feuerbach, including the composer’s own thought, which Steinberg insists must be taken seriously.
