Interview conducted by Hella Bartnig with respectively the director, designer and dramaturg, in the programme book for the 2008 Bavarian State Opera production of Der fliegende Holländer.

November 2008, Volume 2, Number 3, 82–6.

Hella Bartnig: Every seven years the Dutchman is allowed to go ashore to find a woman who will redeem him from his curse. Isn’t his chance of happiness very slight under these conditions?

Werner Hintze: According to our concept of time maybe. But would the chance be any greater if he were allowed to go ashore more frequently? He has been journeying for several centuries without finding a woman, after all. That is his experience.

Peter Konwitschny: The seven years are hardly a valid measure, since the punishment he was condemned to is unending.
